Minusta tämä on hirveän söpö sana, ja käytän sitä joskus esimerkiksi leiriläisistäni tai sijaisopettajana ollessani oppilaistani. Harmi kyllä, sana ei toimi kauhean hyvin suomeksi käytettynä. I think this word is very cute and I sometimes use it for my camp kids or the students when I work as a substitute teacher. Too bad it doesn’t work very well in Finnish. ZAT-ASE – ZAT GUN (Tähtiportti – Stargate ) ”Our cameras saw some sort of weapon.” ”Oh. Well, it's hard to say.” ”Some sort of state secret?” ”No, just difficult to pronounce.” Zat’nik’tel, eli lyhyesti zat-ase, on erinomainen, joskin vaikeasti lausuttava alien-alkuperää oleva ase. Kun sillä ampuu kerran, se tainnuttaa kohteen, joten sitä voi käyttää kavereihinkin. Toisesta osumasta kohde kuolee. TÄHTIPORTTI-SYMBOLI – THE STARGATE SYMBOL (Tähtiportti – Stargate ) ”Chevron seven, locked.” Tähtiportin toimintaperiaate on seuraava: jokainen Tähtiportin symboli kuvastaa jotakin paikkaa avaruudessa. Kun kuusi niistä koodataan peräkkäin, näiden paikkojen risteyskohta on syntyvän madonreiän kohde. Seitsemäs symboli kertoo madonreiän lähtöpisteen. Maan symboli (ja täten maasta lähdettäessä viimeinen kirjattava symboli) muistuttaa Å-kirjainta ja on Tähtiportti-ohjelman tunnus. DRAGONS 4 Lisää lohikäärmeitä! Heikki Morgan Hämäläinen ehdotti biisoni-, saimaannorppa- ja pesukarhulohikäärmeitä. Ainakin norppalohikäärmeellä on leppoisa meno. Mutta biisonilohikäärmeelle unohdin näköjään piirtää korvat, hups. More dragons! Heikki Morgan Hämäläinen asked for bison, Saimaa ringed seal, and raccoon dragons. The seal dragon seems to take it easy. But it seems I forgot to draw ears for the bison dragon, whoops. Lumihevonen ehdotti silkkiuikkulohikäärmettä. Siitä tuli aika söpön ja vaarallisen näköinen yhtä aikaa. Snowhorse asked for a great crested grebe inspired dragon. This one is pretty cute and dangerous-looking at the same time. WARRIORS OF GONDOR Suuntasimme roolipeliporukan kanssa Keski-Maahan heittämään Valtasormusta Tuomiovuoreen. Päädyin auttamaan pelinjohtajaamme ja pelaamaan oman hahmoni sijasta puolta Sormuksen saattueesta (ja esimerkiksi peittoamaan Galdalfina Sarumanin eeppisessä taistelussa!). Oma hahmoni, Thranon - tiikeri-kentauri-alien, jolla on kolminkertainen keuhkojärjestelmä - pääsi siinä sivussa johtamaan Gondorin sotajoukkoja taisteluun Mordorin porteille yhdessä Gondorin pojujen Aragornin, Boromirin ja Faramirin kanssa. Ajatus Thranonista hänelle tehdyssä Gondorin haarniskassa oli liian hieno päästettäväksi piirtämättä ohi. Me and my role player friends headed to Middle Earth to toss the Ring to Mount Doom. I ended up helping our game master and instead of my own character playing half the Fellowship (for example, I got to play Gandalf and beat Saruman in an epic battle!). My own character, Thranon - a tiger centaur alien with triple lung system - got to lead Gondor's army in battle at the gates of Mordor together with the Gondor boys Aragorn, Boromir and Faramis. The idea of Thranon in a custom-made Gondor armor was too awesome not to draw! Pelinjohtajan mukaan Thranon sai taistelussa arven kasvoihinsa, mutta muu veri kuvassa ei ole hänen. Tajusin ihan värittämisen loppuvaiheilla, että jos kuva on siitä vaiheesta, kun Thranon on jo itse ehtinyt haavoittua, niin eiköhän hän ole muutamia örkkejä ehtinyt lahdata itsekin. According to our GM, Thranon got a scar in her face during the battle but the rest of the blood is not hers. It occurred to me when I was almost done with the coloring that if this picture is from that part of the battle where Thranon is injured she probably has caused some damage to several orcs as well. Herra Bronyn hahmo Tea (teinityttö, joka osaa muuttua pöllöksi) sai Faramirilta lahjaksi Gondorin mallin mukaan tehdyn pöllöhaarniskan. Viirupöllöt ovat hurjia muutenkin, joten enpä haluaisi törmätä haarniskoituun viirupöllöön! Mr Brony's character Tea (a teenage girl who can turn into an owl) got a Gondor-style owl armor as a gift from Faramir. ATTACK OF THE MUSHROOMS "I can't do this! There are too many of them!" "You don't have to pick all those mushrooms..."

Woo-hoo, Inktober tehty taas! Ylpeänä voin sanoa, että piirsin joka päivä, paitsi ihan viimeisenä päivänä - olin silloin vaelluksella, enkä todella halunnut kanniskella mustepulloa mukanani ja piirtää pimeässä teltassa. Viimeisen päivän piirroksen tein jo 30. päivänä, eli tein silloin kaksi. Kaikki piirrokset ovat koko A5, ja olen tehnyt ne pullomusteella ja piirtoterällä. Käyttämäni piirtoterä on siitä kätevä, että se tekee keskileveää viivaa, mutta jos sen kääntää ympäri, saa aikaan todella ohutta jälkeä - siis ei tarvitse vaihtaa terää saadakseen eripaksuista viivaa! Yhdessä kuvassa käytin vedellä laimennettua mustetta harmaasävyjen luomiseen. Kaikissa piirroksissa oli lyijykynäluonnos alla, osaan käytin mallikuvia. Vinkkisanoja olen käyttänyt, mutta osittain aika löyhästi, mikä ei tietenkään tässä piirustushaasteessa ole haitaksi. Woo-hoo, Inktober is done! I can proudly say that I drew every day except for the very last one - I went on a hike and really didn't want to carry along an ink bottle or draw in a dark tent. The last drawing I made on the 30th which means I drew two pieces that day. All the drawings are size A5 and made with bottled ink and a dip pen. The nib I use is very handy because it draws a medium line but if I turn it around I get very fine line - so no need to change nibs to get different lines! In one drawing I used water-diluted ink to create gray shades. I sketched all the drawings with pencil and used reference pictures for some. I did use the prompt words, occasionally interpreting them quite freely but it doesn't matter in this drawing challenge. #Inktober #Inktober2020

SALLY AND SHADOW Teen erääseen lastenlehteen sarjakuvaa, jossa seikkailevat varpuspöllö Varpu ja orava Kurre. Koska kyseessä on tilaustyö, en julkaise niitä täällä - mutta mikäänhän ei estä minua piirtämästä muuten kuvia omista hahmoistani! Varpu on pieni varpuspöllö, joka tietää pöllönä olevansa viisaampi kuin useimmat metsän eläimistä. Ja vaikka Varpu tietääkin paljon ja jakaa tietojaan mielellään, sen tietämys maailmasta rajoittuu aika lailla oman kotimetsän asioihin. Varpu voi joskus olla äksy, varsinkin jos Kurre herättää sen päiväunilta, mutta enimmäkseen Varpu on oikein mukava lintu. Kurre taas on nuori ja vähän ylienerginen orava, jolla riittää kysymyksiä kaikesta, mitä ympärillä näkyy. Se saattaa toisinaan innostua asioista niin paljon, että putoaa puusta. Kurre on kuitenkin hyvin ystävällinen ja avulias olento, kunhan jaksaa rauhoittua hetkeksi. I make a comic for a kids' magazine but since it is a commission I will not publish those comics here - but nothing can stop me from drawing other art of my own characters! The main characters are a pygmy owl named Sally and a squirrel called Shadow. Sally is but a tiny pygmy owl but because she is an owl she knows she's wiser than most other animals of the forest. Even though Sally knows a lot and is willing to share her knowledge her knowledge is mostly limited to things in her own home forest. Sally can be a bit cranky sometimes, especially if you wake her up during the day, but she's mostly a very nice bird. Shadow, on the other hand, is a young and a little over-energetic squirrel who has lots of questions about everything around him. He can occasionally get so excited about things that he falls from the tree. In the end, Shadow is a very kind and helpful creature when he just calms down a little.

LEFT-HANDYNESS Piirsin tämän koiran vasemmalla kädelläni. Ihan hyvä siitä tuli, kun ottaa huomioon, että olen oikeakätinen. Se ei ole kovin hyvä jos ottaa huomioon, että yritin alun perin piirtää hevosen. I drew this dog using my left hand. It's pretty good considering I'm right-handed. But not very good if you consider I was originally trying to draw a horse.

Olen viime aikoina katsonut Clone Warsia. Rex on mahtava hahmo. Tosin noille hänen olkasuojusjutuilleen en ole keksinyt muuta selitystä kuin sen, että niillä saadaan hänelle helposti erottuva siluetti. Ja no, siinä ne kyllä onnistuvatkin. I've been watching The Clone Wars lately. Rex is an awesome character. Though I haven't come up with any reason for those shoulder plate things of his other than that they give him an easy-to-recognize silhouette. And well, they work for that. COLORFUL ANIMALS My friend Julia has a theory. "The world used to be black and white. You can see it from old photographs." "Huh?" // "And then someone invented colors. And so the world turned colorful. That's when you started getting color photos too." // "And?" "Way back then all the animals were also black and white, as you can see in old pictures." // "Afterwards most animals have of course developed colors. But some are still on their way to the world of colors. Like zebras, magpies and badgers." // "I'm sure they'll develop colors eventually, but it might take time. But you're a biologist. I'm sure you'd have some educated guesses as of what these animals might end up looking like!" // "Hmm..." // "Very well, I'll do my best and turn black and white animals more colorful. But since I am a biologist, these new colorations must make sense for the animals. So I'm going to explain WHY these animals would look the way they do. Zebras' stripes turn to the color of dry grass and are thus a better camouflage against lions. Giant pandas are also better at hiding when they're brown-ish. Skunks become a color polymorphic species which means that individuals are differently colored. I went to the zoo to draw animals from live model. I painted these peacocks with water colors in maybe five minutes. The one on the left was sketched with pencil, the one on the right wasn't.

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 1 RAPHAEL & CASEY JONES (Teini-ikäiset mutanttininjakilpikonnat – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ) ”Friends of yours?” ”Brothers, actually.” ”I can see the family resemblance.” Ninjakilpparit ovat minulle kaikin puolin rakkaita hahmoja, ja voisin tehdä kokonaisen sarjan siitä, miten mielenkiintoiset suhteet näillä tyypeillä on keskenään – mutta he ovat veljeksiä, joten he eivät toimi ystävyys-sarjaan kovin hyvin. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 2 HAN SOLO & CHEWBACCA (Star Wars) ”It’s not wise to upset a Wookiee… 'cause a droid don't pull people's arms out of their sockets when they lose.” Han ja Chewie ovat vain sellainen kaksikko, että pakkohan heitä on rakastaa. Koska wookieet ovat erittäin kunniantuntoisia, Chewie on hyvin uskollinen Hanille, joka pelasti joskus hänen henkensä. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 3 RONJA & BIRK – RONIA & BIRK (Ronja, ryövärintytär – Ronia, the Robber’s Daughter ) ”We only have this summer, you and I, and the way things are with me now, I don’t mind very much about living unless you are with me. And when winter comes you won’t be with me...” Ronja ja Birk ovat tämän listan platoniset Romea ja Julia – heidän isänsä vihaavat toisiaan, mutta lapset eivät anna sen haitata ystävyyttään, ainakaan kauaa. Kun he joutuvat valitsemaan perheidensä ikuisten riitojen tai toistensa välillä, he valitsevat toisensa. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 4 KOLME CABALLEROA – THE THREE CABALLEROS ”They say we are birds of a feather!” Aku Ankka on todellinen surullisen hahmon ritari, jota useimmat sukulaiset ja niin kutsutut ystävät lähinnä pilkkaavat ja käyttävät hyväkseen. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 5 SHERLOCK HOLMES & JOHN WATSON (Sherlock Holmes) ”I don't have friends; I've just got one.” Sherlock Holmes ja John Watson ovat varmasti kirjallisuuden tunnetuimpia ystävyksiä. Tosin ainakaan Sherlock ei näytä sitä kovin usein. Vain yhdessä Conan Doylen Holmes-novellissa, kun Watsonia ammutaan, Sherlock kerrankin osoittaa, kuinka tärkeä Watson hänelle on. Myös kertojana toimiva Watson huomioi Sherlockin harvinaisen tunteenpurkauksen ja toteaa, että kaikki hänen Sherlockille osoittamansa ystävyys on ollut sen yhden hetken arvoista. Sherlock Holmes and John Watson must be among the most well-known friends in literature. Even though Sherlock doesn’t show it often. In only one short story by Conan Doyle, when Watson is being shot, Sherlock shows how much Watson means to him. Also Watson himself, the narrator of the story, notes Sherlock’s rare outburst and says that all the friendship he’s shown to Sherlock has been worth that one moment. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 6 PÄHKINÄ & ISOPÄÄ – HAZEL & BIGWIG (Ruohometsän kansa – Watership Down ) ”My Chief Rabbit has told me to defend this run and until he says otherwise I shall stay here.” Isopään luottamusta ja ystävyyttä ei ole helppoa voittaa, mutta Pähkinän viisas ja peräänantamaton johtamistapa onnistui siinä. Isopää hyväksyi lopulta Pähkinän ylikaniinikseen, ja Pähkinä kiipesi ojasta Isopään puolesta, kun kaksikko luuli itse Kuoleman tulleen hakemaan Isopäätä. Kaksi pientä kaniinia ehkä, mutta yksi suuri ystävyys. It is not easy to gain Bigwig’s loyalty and friendship, but Hazel’s wise and persistent way of leading succeeded in it. In the end, Bigwig accepted Hazel as his Chief Rabbit, and Hazel climbed out of the ditch for Bigwig when the two thought that Death itself had come to claim Bigwig. Ammattisotilas Jack ja arkeologi Daniel eivät olleet mistään samaa mieltä. Toista ilmavoimien upseeria, Samia, kohtaan Jack oli lähinnä epäluuloinen, ja Teal’c oli kirjaimellisesti vihollisen puolella. Half a season and some close calls later and you can’t break these four apart even if you used dynamite. In this picture Sam and Daniel are excited because they found an exciting rock with exciting carvings in it, Jack is bored because he doesn’t find the rock exciting, and Teal’c is keeping guard. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 8 PIKO & FANTASIO – SPIROU & FANTASIO ”Travelling with this guy has the advantage that you won’t get bored for a second...” Jokainen tarina tarvitsee sankarin. Mutta joskus sankari voi yksin olla vähän liian kiltti ja täydellinen partiopoika ollakseen oikeasti kiinnostava. Siksi sankari tarvitsee kaverin, joka on luonteeltaan hieman räväkämpi. Tämä on monessa tarinassa nähty kuvio, kuuluisimpana ehkä Tintti ja kapteeni Haddock. Itse myös pidän kovasti reippaan ja kunnollisen Pikon sekä hieman sekopäisemmän ja pessimistisemmän Fantasion seikkailuista. Päähenkilöporukan täydentää Pikon lemmikkiorava Spip. Every story needs a hero. But sometimes the hero can be a bit too nice and perfect boy scout type of a person to be actually interesting. That’s why the hero needs a friend who has a bit more spice to their character. This has been seen in many stories, maybe the most famos of theim being Tintin and Captain Haddock. I also like the adventures of the brisk and reasonable Spirou and the more crazy and pessimistic Fantasio. The main characters also include Spirou’s pet squirrel Spip. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 9 TEX WILLER & KIT CARSON (Tex Willer) ”They don’t produce friends like that anymore!” Tex ja Carson ovat molemmat Texasin Rangereita, joten yleiseen työnkuvaan kuuluu kaverin rinnalla oleminen tiukimmissakin tilanteissa. Ja tämän pelastaminen joka toinen päivä (joka toinen päivä pitää olla itse pelastettavana). Tex ja Carson maustavat ystävyyttään jatkuvalla keskinäisellä herjaamisella ja kinaamisella, mutta voivat aina luottaa toistensa apuun. Both Tex and Carson are Texas Rangers so their job is basically being by your friend’s side even in the most desperate situations. And saving his skin every other day (every other day it’s your turn tu be saved). Tex and Carson spice up their friendship with constant pickering and nagging but they can always trust in each other’s help. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 10 ANAKIN SKYWALKER & REX (Star Wars: The Clone Wars) ”Next time just tell me to jump.” ”Now where’s the fun in that?” Clone Wars -sarja teki sen, mihin Star Wars -elokuvat eivät ehtineet: se näytti sen taistelutoveruus-ystävyyden, joka muodostui kloonisotilaiden ja näiden seuraamien jedikenraalien välille. Keskeisimpänä näistä on Anakinin ja kapteeni Rexin ystävyys, johon kuuluu kaverin pelastaminen joka toinen päivä, täydellinen luottamus toiseen, sopivan verran sotilaallista kunnioitusta ja toisaalta sopivan verran vitsailua ja naljailua. Tämä ystävyys tietenkin päättyi ikävästi, kun Anakin rupesi Darth Vaderiksi, mutta se oli hieno ystävyys niin kauan kuin sitä kesti. The Clone Wars series did what the Star Wars movies didn’t have time for: it showed the brothers-in-arms-friendship that formed between the clone troopers and the Jedi generals they followed. The central one the the show is the friendship between Anakin and Captain Rex that included saving the other every other day, completely trusting each other, a suitable amount of military-like respect and, on the other hand, a suitable amount of joking and humor. This friendship of course ended badly when Anakin became Darth Vader but it was a wonderful friendship while it lasted. (I could have had Ahsoka Tano or Commander Cody, for example, pictured with Rex, but the friendship between Anakin and Rex is possibly my favorite in all its fun and tragedy.) MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 11 WOODY & BUZZ LIGHTYEAR (Toy Story) ”When it all ends, I’ll have old Buzz Lightyear to keep me company. For infinity and beyond.” Woodyn elämä Andyn lempileluna oli täydellistä – kunnes Buzz Lightyear tuli taloon ja vei hänen paikkansa. Sitähän Woody ei voinut sulattaa, mikä johti lopulta hurjaan seikkailuun kotiin pääsemiseksi. Matkan aikana Woody ja Buzz oppivat paljon itsestään, toisistaan ja siitä, mitä leluna oleminen tarkoittaa. Ja kyseinen seikkailu teki Woodystä ja Buzzista ystäviä. Lapset kasvavat, mutta ystävyys on ikuista. Woody’s life as Andy’s favorite toy was perfect – until Buzz Lightyear came to the house and took his place. This was something Woody couldn’t take, which finally led to a fantastic adventure to get back home. Along the way Woody and Buzz learn a lot about themselves, each other and what it means to be a toy. And this adventure made Woody and Buzz friends. Children grow up but friendship is forever. I can’t say I remember much of this book because I’ve only read it once and it was quite some time ago. But the description of friendship in The Lies of Locke Lamora is one of the best I’ve ever read. The friendship between Locke and Jean (and the rest of their gang, that is Calo, Galdo and Bug) is at the same time heartwarming and heartbreaking. Who wouldn’t friends like these! MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 21 RESSU & KAUSTINEN – SNOOPY & WOODSTOCK (Tenavat – Peanuts ) ”It’s hero time!” Ressu on koira, ja Kaustinen on pieni lintu, ja enimmäkseen näiden kaverusten suhde on sitä, että he istuvat Ressun kopin katolla juttelemassa. Joskus Ressu ja Kaustinen riitelevät pahasti ja vannovat, etteivät enää koskaan puhu toisilleen. Siitäkin huolimatta Ressu oli valmis vaarantamaan henkensä pelastaakseen Kaustisen naapurin hirviömäisen kissan, Toisen maailmansodan, kynsistä, koska niin ystävät nyt vain tekevät. Instead, they did something for me that would make my transformations not only bearable, but the best times of my life...” Remus Lupinilla ei lapsena ollut ystäviä, koska hän oli ihmissusi, eikä ihmissusilla juuri ole kavereita. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 23 MIYAMOTO USAGI & GENNOSUKE (Usagi Yojimbo) ”You dirty, untrustworthy, lying, cheating, son of a dog of a pig of a rat! I ought to mince you up into mulch!” Usagi ja Gen päätyivät yhteistyöhön lähinnä sattumalta, ja Gen kun ei ole kovin kunniallinen sarvikuono, joutui Usagi huijatuksi. Myöhemmin Usagi pääsi kuitenkin iskemään takaisin, ja jossain vaiheessa näistä kahdesta tuli enemmän tai vähemmän ystäviä. Usagin ja Genin tarina ei ole niinkään tarina ystävistä vaan ystävystymisestä. Ja joskus siihen menee aikaa… Usagi and Gen ended up working together by coincidence, and since Gen isn’t really a very honorable rhino, Usagi got cheated. MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP, PART 26 LEGOLAS & GIMLI (Taru sormusten herrasta – The Lord of the Rings ) ”I never thought I’d die fighting side-by-side with an Elf.” ”What about side-by-side with a friend?” ”Aye… I could do that.” Ja viimeisenä, vaan ei suinkaan vähäisimpänä… kyllähän te kaikki tiesitte, että tämä on tulossa, vai mitä? Taru sormusten herrasta on täynnä hyviä ystävyyssuhteita, mutta kukaan ei liene yläättynyt siitä, että Gimli ja Legolas pääsivät listalle. Nämä kääpiö ja haltia aloittivat tuttavuutensa nätisti sanoen epäluuloisina tosiaan kohtaan toisen rodun takia, mutta yhteiset seikkailut tekivät heistä erottamattomia ystävyksiä. En ottanut sitä mukaan listalleni, koska olen itse ollut mukana luomassa sitä. Kyseiset hahmot ovat herra Bronyn ja minun roolipelihahmot Tea ja Thranon Sankariakatemia-roolipelistä, jota pelaamme ystäviemme kanssa. Olemme herra Bronyn kanssa viettäneet useammankin tovin kävelyllä pohtien näiden hahmojemme suhdetta. But not to sound like I only complain I'm going to introduce you to a friendship between female characters that I find pretty good. I didn't take it on my list because I've been there to create it. The characters in question are Mr Brony's and my role playing characters Tea and Thranon, respectively, and we play them in the Hero Academy RPG we play with our friends. Mr Brony and I have spent quite a few moments on walks talking about our characters and their relationship. Herra Bronyn hahmo, Nyctea "Tea" Salo on kirkkonummelainen teinityttö, joka osaa muuttua pöllöksi. Hänen lapsuutensa oli muuten hyvin tavallinen, mutta häntä kiusattiin koulussa ja hän joutui koko ajan pelkäämään, että joku saa selville, että hän muuttuu joskus pöllöksi. Siksi Tean on aina ollut vaikea luottaa kehenkään. Minun hahmoni, tiikeri-kentauri-alien Thanonin lapsuus on puolestaan ollut aivan toisenlainen: hän eli isoisänsä johtamassa metsästäjä-keräilijälaumassa, jossa fyysinen rasitus, vaarat ja vammat olivat arkipäivää. Sen vastapainona Thranonilla on aina ollut tukenaan perhelaumansa vankkumaton tuki ja kannustus, ja Sankariakatemiaan tullessaan Thranonin on vaikea ymmärtää, miten kukaan voisi koskaan pettää oman porukkansa. Teasta ja Thranonista tuli Akatemiassa nopeasti ystäviä erilaisista taustoistaan huolimatta. Ensinnäkin he ovat vuosikurssinsa nuorimmat opiskelijat, ja lisäksi he pitävät monista samoista asioista. Tea ihailee Thranonin miekkailu- ja taistelutaitoja, ja Thranonin mielestä Tea on hauska ja fiksu kaveri moniin seikkailuihin. Ties mihin nämä kaksi ja heidän muut sankariystävänsä vielä päätyvät! Mr Brony's character, Nyctea "Tea" Salo is a teenage girl from a small town in Southern Finland. She can turn into an owl. Her childhood was pretty normal except she was bullied in school and she was always afraid someone would find out she turns into an owl sometimes. That's why Tea has always had trouble trusting others. My character, tiger-centaur-alien Thranon has had a very different childhood: she lived in a hunter-gatherer tribe lead by her grandfather. There, physical stress, dangers and injuries are everyday occurrences but on the other hand, Thranon has always had unwavering support and help from her home tribe. When she came to the Hero Academy, Thranon had hard time understanding how anyone could ever betray their own. In the Academy, Tea and Thranon quickly became friends, despite of their different backgrounds. First off, they're the youngest of their class, and they also share many interests. Tea admires Thranon's skills in fighting and swordsmanship, and Thranon finds Tea to be a fun and witty companion for many adventures. Who knows what adventures these two and their hero friends will end up in! My Little Pony by Hasbro Hero Academy and it's characters all belong to their creators (except for Thranon, she's mine)

MONTH OF FRIENDSHIP – DELETED SCENES Joo. Olen hönö nörtti ja tykkään hassuista asioista. Siksi haluan näin Ystävyyden kuukauden lopuksi jakaa teille muutaman ”ystävyyden”, jotka ”hylkäsin” varsinaiselta listalta. Pistäkää kieli poskeen ja nauttikaa. Yeah. I’m a silly nerd and I like silly things. That’s why, now that the Month of Friendship is over, I’d like to share with you some ”friendships” I ”rejected” from the actual list. Don’t take this seriously, enjoy. SCOTTY & ENTERPRISE (Star Trek) ”Me bairns ... me poor, wee bairns!” Enterprisen yli-insinööri Scottyn ja Enterprisen suhde on kaunis ja herkkä. Enterprise ei koskaan jätä Scottyä pulaan, ja Scotty korjaa aina rakkaansa kaikki kolhut. (Niin, piirsin Enterpriselle kädet ja söpön naaman. Entäs sitten? Jättimäinen Scotty hyppelemässä avaruudessa on ihan yhtä hölmöä.) Hylkäämisen syy: en halunnut romanttisia suhteita ystävyyslistalle. Sain kokeilla kaverini tabletilla digitaalista piirtämistä. Olen pari kertaa värittänyt digitaalisesti, mutta en koskaan tehnyt kokonaista kuvaa pelkästään diginä. Tässä pari pikaista kokeiluani: A friend of mine let me try digital drawing on her tablet. I've colored a couple of imaged digitally but never before made an entire picture that way. The reason for this is mainly that I haven't been interested in it enough to get my own tablet or similar digital art gadget, and it's not that easy to borrow one either, Secondly, the art programs I've used haven't been too user friendly but Procreate, which I used now, was actually really easy (not sponsored!). This is my very first fully digital work of art (the term "art" is used loosely here). This would be nicer if I had for example used another minute to draw that dog-creature... The point was mainly to try out how layers are used. Fun fact: with the exception of shading and the creature's eyes, there's only one color used in this drawing, just in various hues. This shark is a little more refined work of art, though I still mostly played with layers. The biggest difference to drawing with pen and paper is that you can draw on separate layers and treat them separately whereas in traditional drawing everything is on the same layer. This one's not that bad, for my second-ever attempt on fully digital drawing, so maybe I can continue practicing...

ROOSTER Ostin tilaustöitä varten uutta paperia, joka piti tietysti ensin testata. I bought new paper for commission works and of course had to test it. That's why I've used many mediums in this artwork: ink, water colors, masking liquid in two ways and colored pencils. I decided to draw a male red jungle fowl because I felt like drawing some handsome, colorful bird - and roosters are just that! Red jungle fowl is the wild ancestor of the domestic hen.

ANIMAL COMPANIONS Hahmojen eläinkumppaneita roolipelistä, jota olen hiljattain pelannut muutaman kaverin kanssa: Kake-vuohi, pesukarhu Urho II ja Fluffy-lammas. Characters' animal companions from a role playing game I've been playing recently with some friends: Kake the goat, Urho II the raccoon and Fluffy the sheep. Fluffyllä on ehkä hienoin tietämäni taustatarina kaikista eläinkumppaneista. Se liittyi seurueeseen pelissä, jonka minä vedin. Pelaajien hahmot olivat saapuneet kylään, joka oli ryöstetty ja poltettu ja jonka asukaat oli kaapattu kaivosorjiksi. Ainoat elonmerkit kylässä olivat pari eksynyttä kanaa ja lammas, jota ryöstäjät eivät olleet huomanneet yön pimeydessä. Yksi hahmoista, soturikeiju Sparkles, päätti ottaa kiinni kyseisen tunnelmanluojalampaan, nimetä sen, ottaa sen mukaan seikkailuun, kouluttaa sen taistelulampaaksi ja kirjaimellisesti uhata tappaa lampaan edellisen omistajan jotta saisi pitää eläimen itse. Fluffy has possibly the greatest backstory of all the animal companions I know. She joined the party in a game in which I was the game master. The player characters had arrived into a village that had been robbed and burned and whose inhabitants had been captured and used as slaves in a mine. The only life signs in the village were a couple of lost hens and a sheep the attackers hadn't noticed in the dark of the night. One of the characters, the warrior fairy Sparkles decided to catch said mood-setting sheep, name her, take her along to the adventure, train her as a battle sheep and literally threaten to kill the sheep's previous owner so that she could keep the animal herself. So now Fluffy is Sparky's faithful pet. As the game master I was confused but amused by the players' actions. I the same game Urho the raccoon killed a man with sheer dice luck and the help of a sling-shot scorpion. Kake is the animal companion of my character and didn't partake that particular skirmish. All character's belong to their players (but Kake is my boy).

No, en oikeasti mennyt koputtamaan Mudkipi oveen, mutta olen Mudkipille paljon velkaa englanninkielen taidoistani. Hänen jatkuvat sanaleikkinsä pitivät minut varpaillani, ja koska en tykkää jos josku käyttää sanoja fiksummin kuin minä, oli minun pakko opetella vastaamaan! Well, I didn't actually go and knock on Mudkip's door but I do owe a lot to Mudkip for my English skills. His constant punning kept me on my toes, and since I don't like people outsmarting me when it comes to using words I had to learn how to pun back!

TRAGEDY OF THE COMMONS Laki telkien taa sen toimittaa / Ken yhteismaalta hanhen varastaa Vaan vapaaksi kelmi suurempi jää / Jok' yhteismaan hanhelta kähveltää Yhteismaan ongelma on vanha poliittisessa filosofiassa mutta myös esimerkiksi ekologiassa tutkittu tilanne, jota kuvaa erinomaisesti kuvassa siteerattu, 1600-luvulla kirjoitettu englantilainen kansanruno (jonka korkeimman omakätisesti käänsin). Yhteismaan ongelmaa voi kuvata vaikka näin: kuvittele kylä, jossa on kymmenen taloa. Kylän laidalla on yhteismaana oleva niitty, jota kukaan ei omista tai hoida, mutta jota kaikki saavat käyttää. Kyseisellä niityllä mahtuu laiduntamaan sata hanhea, joten jokaisesta talosta voidaan laittaa kymmenen hanhea niitylle. Tragedy of the commons is a situation studied in political philosophy as well as in ecology that is excellently described by this English folk poem that dates back to the 17th century that I wrote in my drawing. You can visualize the tragedy of the commons like this: imagine a village of ten houses. There's a meadow by the village that is not owned or taken care of by anyone but everyone may use it. The meadow is large enough to feed one hundred geese so every house can have ten geese feeding on the meadow. Like this, all the geese are well-fed and in good condition, and everyone is happy. But what about when someone decides to send two extra geese on the meadow? Well, no one will notice it and the meadow can feed 102 geese as well as 100. And what's going to happen if everyone else puts a couple of extra geese to the meadow? Suddenly there are 150 geese, and they all starve as there is not enough food for any of them. The villagers, too, suffer as the geese starve. But because the meadow is common land no one can be told not to keep their geese in there. Now you can scale this up and think about, not only common meadows, but also forests, oceans' fish stocks or our atmosphere. I think you see why this problem has been given plenty of thought and why it made its way into a poem already some 400 years ago. If everyone just wants more and just take from a shared but finite resource everyone will eventually suffer. Even geese. White-tailed eagle: usually found soaring in the archipelago, this great bird of pray once went nearly extinct but has recently even nested in Helsinki. Other Finnish national sports teams also have been named after animals: the national basketball team is called "Susijengi" ("Wolf gang") and, most notably, the Finnish national ice hockey team is called "Leijonat" ("Lions") because there's a lion in the Finnish coat of arms (even though there are no lions in Finnish woods...).
