Jutun otsikko Per Impro Ad Astra ("Improvisaation kautta tähtiin") on Romeon minulle suunnittelemän vaakunan tunnuslauseena :D In this comic you'll meet my friends Julia and Romeo with whom I was leading a camp last summer. The title of this comic, Per Impro Ad Astra ("Trough improvisation to stars") was the motto in the coat of arms that Romeo designed for me. Once upon a camp... "GAAAH!!" // "I hate it when these trays always fall from the table where they're getting dry!" // "But it's no surprise, actually. AUTUMN HARVESRT

CROW ...jolla on liian lyhyt siipi. ...with one way too short wing. And for my non-Finnish readers: a really interesting bird fact. The crows we have here in Finland are called hooded crows (Corvus cornix) and they are black-and-grey. The crows of West Europe, carrion crows (Corvus corone) are all black. Ornithologists fight over whether or not (or feather or not?) these are the same species or not. Then there is of course the rook (Corvus frugilegus) that lives all over Europe and is also black but it looks different from other crows (at least to me).

TIME-TRAVELLER'S BOOK Joitakin vuosia sitten tajusin, että on turhaa käyttää aikaa ja vaivaa siihen, että yrittää etsiä kivoja musitikirjoja käytettäviksi päiväkirjoina. Helpommalla pääsee, kun ostaa jonkin tylsän kirjan ja koristelee sen mieleisekseen. Tämä sai nimekseen Aikamatkustajan kirja (matkustanhan minäkin ajassa, tosin vakionopeudella ja vain yhteen suuntaan...). Some years ago I realized that there is no point spending time and money trying to find a nice notebook so use it as a diary. It's much easier to buy a boring notebook and decorate it. WINTER WANDERING I went for a skiing trip to Litokaira with some other people for a week. // Underwear: Undershirt (silk wool), underpants (silk wool), three pairs of woolen socks // In between: Scarf (silk wool), woolly sweater, trousers, woolen lining of boots // Overwear: beanie, anorak, mittens, trousers, skiing boots // Pause clothes: a second beanie, quilted jacket, quilted trousers of the British army //' The British army trousers have zippers on both sides - they can be put on and taken off without removing yous skis! // + a backpack or a sledge USING ENERGY ON A SKIING TRIP Ski 10 kilometers in -20 degrees on forest skis and with a backpack. // If you fall over, getting up is difficult... because you're under level zero! "Help!" // In the evening shovel off 40 cm of snow... so that you can put up a tent. // If you still have extra energy, you can always make some more firewood. // "It's half past five and I could already go to sleep." A MONTH OF HEROES Tiedättehän ne julisteet, joita oli luokissa ala-asteella ja joilla opeteltiin kirjaimia? Niissä oli aina kirjain ja jokin siihen sopiva kuva, tyyliin ”A niin kuin apina”, ”B niin kuin banaani” ja niin edelleen. Päädyin jostain syystä kerran muistelemaan näitä julisteita ja ajattelin tehdä oman versioni. Annoin sille nimeksi H is for Hero (eli S niin kuin sankari ). You must know those posters that were in classrooms when you were in the elementary school that were there to teach you letters. There was always a letter and a picture that went with it, like ”A is for Apple”, ”B is is for Banana” and so on. For some reason I started to think about those posters one time and decided to make my own version. I named it H is for Hero. Kuvitin oman kirjainkuvastoni fiktiivisillä sankareilla eli suosikkihahmoillani kirjoista, elokuvista, tv-sarjoista ja sarjakuvista. Ja koska itse keksin tämän pelin, sain keksiä myös säännöt. Osa sankareista on mukana etunimen mukaan, osa sukunimen, osaan käytin suomenkielistä nimeä ja osaan englanninkielistä. Jätin suosiolla Å:n, Ä:n ja Ö:n pois, sillä en keksinyt niillä yhtään mitään. Julkaisen yhden sankarin päivässä joka päivä helmikuun ajan, mukana myös muutama sananen siitä, miksi juuri tämä sankari pääsi hyvin valikoidulle 26 sankarin listalleni. I illustrated my alphabet poster with fictive heroes, my favourite characters from books, movies, tv series, and comics. And because I came up with this game I also made up the rules. Some of the heroes are here with their first name and some with their last name, some with their Finnish name and others with their English name. I left out the Finnish weirdos Å, Ä and Ö because I didn’t come up with anything with them. I will post one hero a day every day in February as well as a couple of words about why this hero made it into my very exclusive list of 26 heroes.

ARAMIS (Kolme Muskettisoturia – The Three Musketeers ) ”He knows our motto: every man for himself!” Kaikki neljä muskettisoturia olisivat ansainneet paikan tällä listalla, mutta valitsin mukaan vain Aramiksen. Oikeastaanhan Aramis ei edes haluaisi olla muskettisoturi vaan ennemmin pappi, ja loppujen lopuksi hän toteuttaakin unelmansa. Olen pitänyt muskettisotureista pienestä pitäen, ja Aramis on ollut suosikkini käytännössä aina – se hiukkasen outo mutta älykäs heppuli, joka vastahakoisuudestaan huolimatta on ihan yhtä urhea kuin muutkin. Tämän kuvan inspiroi BBC:n The Musketeers -sarja, jossa Aramista esittää Santiago Cabrera. Each one of the four musketeers would have earned a place on this list but I chose Aramis. Actually he wouldn’t even like to be a musketeer, he’d rather be a priest and in the end he really does become one. I’ve loved The Three Musketeers ever since I was small, and Aramis has basically always been my favourite character – the little weird but smart fellow, who, dispite the fact that he doesn’t consider himself to be a warrior, is just as brave as anyone else. This picture is inspired by BBC’s The Musketeers where Aramis was played by Santiago Cabrera. ARDETH BAY (Muumio ja Muumion paluu – The Mummy and The Mummy Returns ) ”Why can’t you people ever keep your feet on the ground?” Ardeth Bay on ”se outo soturihiippari jolla on ne naamatatuoinnit”, koska hänen nimeään ei käsittääkseni kertaakaan mainita ensimmäisessä elokuvassa. Ardeth on mielestäni elokuvien paras osa, se mystinen sankari, jonka jokainen kunnon seikkailutarina tarvitsee; se kaveri, jonka kaikki luulevat kuolevan, mutta joka kaivautuu taas esiin, koska on vaan niin eeppinen. Huolimatta siitä, että Ardeth moittii muita sitä, että nämä tahtovat lentää, emme juuri koskaan näe hänen nauravan paitsi hänen roikkuessaan pienen lentokoneen siivellä. Kai Medjai-soturien johtajakin saa joskus haaveilla lentämisestä? Elokuvissa Ardethia esittää Oded Fehr. Ardeth Bay is ”the weird warrior fellow with the face tattoos” because, as far as I know, his name is not mentioned in the first movie. For me, Ardeth is the best part of the movie, the mystic hero that every adventure story needs; the guy that everyone thinks dies but who makes a comeback just because he’s so epic. Despite Ardeth blaiming others for wanting to fly, we almost never see him laught except when he’s hanging on the wing of a small airplane. I hope that even the leader of the Medjai is allowed to dream about flying. Ardeth is played by Oded Fehr. Muita sankareita: Bra’tac (Tähtiportti), Sirius Musta (Harry Potter) ja Batman. ICHABOD CRANE (Päätön ratsumies – Sleepy Hollow ) ”It was a horseman, a dead one. Headless.” Ichabod Crane pyörtyy kahdessa tunnissa useammin kuin koko muu sankaripoppooni yhteensä. Ikinä. Ainakin melkein. (Ei sentään ihan, minun listalleni pääsee aika hyvin sillä, että on ainakin jossain vaiheessa taju kankaalla…) Oli miten oli, hermoheikkoudestaan huolimatta Ichabod (tässä Johnny Deppin esittämänä Tim Burtonin Päättömässä ratsumiehessä) päihittää päättömän ratsumiehen ja hänen kuolevaiset kutsujansa sekä selviää räjähtävästä tuulimyllystä. Ja onhan hänellä historian hienoimmat tiede…rillit…jotain. Ichabod Crane faints more times in two hours than all my other heroes put together. Ever. At least almost. (Well, not quite, you get to my list pretty easily by being unconcious at some point…) However, despite his occasional panicing, Ichabod (here as Johnny Depp played him in Tim Burton’s Sleepy Hollow) beats the Headless Horseman and his mortal summoners and survives an exploding windmill. DONATELLO (Teini-ikäiset mutanttininjakilpikonnat – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ) ”Those are Neil Armstrong’s footprints right there. If we weren’t being hunted by deadly flying crazys, this might be one of the coolest moments in my entire life!” Donatello on suosikkini ninjakilppareista – ja minä sentään rakastan heitä kaikkia. Donnie ei todellakaan ole veljeksistä taitavin taistelija, mutta se ei häntä haittaa. Hän itsekin sanoo olevansa ennemmin tiedemies kuin soturi ja rakentelee kaikenlaisia nerokkaita vempeleitä helpottamaan elämää (varsinainen nero, kun ottaa huomioon, että hän rakentaa kaiken viemäreistä kalastamistaan roskista). Donnie viihtyy paljon itsekseen ja mieluummin puhuu kuin taistelee. Jostain syystä kaikki kamalimmat asiat tapahtuvat juuri Donnielle (Same as It Never was… Oikeesti). Ironista kyllä, hän oli se, joka pudotti kilppariveljesten arkkivihollisen Silppurin kranaatteineen katolta alkuperäisessä sarjakuvassa. Donatello is my favourite of the ninja turtles – and I love them all. Donnie is definately not the best fighter of the brothers but it doesn’t bother him. He says himself that he consideres himself more of a scientist than a warrior and builds all sorts of ingenious gadgets to help their life (he’s quite a genious when you think that he builds everything from thrash he fishes from the sewers). Donnie likes spending time alone and he talks rather than fights. For some reason all the most horrible things always happen to Donnie (Same as It Never Was… Seriously). Ironically, he was the one who knocked the Shredder, the Ninja Turtles’ arch enemy, off the roof with his granate in the original comics. EVINRUDE (Pelastuspartio Bernard ja Bianca – The Rescuers ) ”Bbbbbzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!” Evinrude on sarkarikaartini pienin mutta takuulla pippurisin jäsen. Hänellä on myös sankarijoukon hämmentävimmät viikset… Evinrude toimii venekuskina/perämoottorina jossain Floridan soilla ja vaaroja uhmaten auttaa elokuvan hiirikaksikkoa näiden pelastusoperaatiossa. Maailma tosin saattaa olla pienelle sudenkorennolle vaarallinen paikka, mutta onneksi tippa pontikkaa virvoittaa uupuneen. Pelastuspartio Bernard ja Bianca on muuten ensimmäinen elokuva, jonka muistan nähneeni elokuvissa (eräässä vanhoja elokuvia näyttävässä teatterissa), aikana, jolloin hiiret ja muut pikkuotukset olivat minulle sankareista suurimmat. Evinrude is the smallest but definately the bravest member of my group of heroes. He also has the most confusing mustache of the lot… Evinrude works as a boat driver/motor somewhere on the swamps of Florida and helps the movie’s mouse duo in their rescue mission. The world might be a dangerous place for a little dragonfly but luckily a drop of moonshine brings him back to life when he’s exhausted. The Rescuers is by the way the first movie I remember seeing in the movies (in a theatre that shows old movies) back in the day when mice and other small critters were the greatest heroes for me. KETTU – FOX (Kaukametsän pakolaiset – The Animals of Farhing Wood ) ”Stop going round in circles.” Tiedän, että moni ikäiseni sai ikuiset traumat Kaukametsän pakolaiset -tv-sarjasta. Minä katsoin sitä viisivuotiaana ihan into piukeana, ja sitten minusta tuli biologi. Yksi sarjan päähahmoista ja Kaukametsän eläinten johtaja oli Kettu, jota ihailin suuresti, olihan hän kaikkea, mitä sankarin kuului olla: nokkela, rohkea, komea ja aina valmiina pelastamaan ystävänsä. Ei Kettu kuitenkaan ole mikään yksiulotteinen sankari, vaan hänelläkin on vikansa, kuten kärttyisyys ja epäluuloisuus. Kettu on yksi ”vanhimmista” sankareistani ja täten yksi niistä, jotka ovat vaikuttaneet minuun kaikkein eniten. I know that many of my age-mates were traumatized forever because of The Animals of Farthing Woods tv series. When I was five it was my favourite tv show, and then I became a biologist. One of the main characters of the show and the leader of the animals was Fox whom I gratly admired. After all, he was everything a good hero needs to be: smart, brave, handsome and anlways ready to save his friends. But he’s not a one-dimensional hero, he too has his weaknesses like grumpiness and suspicion. Fox is one of my ”oldest” heroes and therefore one of those that have affected me the most. GRATH PITKÄNUOLI – GRATH LONGFLETCH (Jalokivien jäljillä – The Pearls of Lutra ) “Hear my longbow singing.” Grath edustaa täällä saukkoja ja koko Redwallin tarun sankarikaartia. Vihreäsulkaisia nuolia ammuskeleva saukko seilaa pitkin meriä, kirjoittaa runoja ja mätkii vihollisia kuonoon minkä kerkeää. Kuvaa piirtäessäni kriiseilin sitä, että onko Grath vasenkätinen, kun satuin piirtämään hänet pitämään joustaan niin. Päädyin siihen että on, sillä luen kirjojen kansikuvituksen canoniksi, vaikka asiasta ei kirjassa mitään mainitakaan. Grath is here representing otters and the whole hero league of A Tale of Redwall. This otter shoots arrows with green feathers, sails across the seas, writes poems and kicks the tails of her enemies as much as she can. When I was drawing this picture I had a crisis: could I draw her to be left-handed? I decided that I could because I count the book’s cover illustration to be canon even though it was not mentioned in the book. HERMIONE GRANGER (Harry Potter) ”Brilliant. This isn’t magic – it’s logic – a puzzle.” Kun oli suunnilleen kymmenvuotias, näin itseni niin selvästi Hermionessa: kirjoja rakastava tyttö, jolla on ruskeat silmät, kiharat tummat hiukset ja etupurenta, nörtti, joka on aina luokkansa paras liki kaikessa (paitsi liikunnassa) ja joka saa myös kuulla siitä… Jopa Hermionen suojelius on saukko, joka on minun lempieläimeni! Olimme yksitoistavuotiaina käytännössä sama henkilö! Opiskelun ohessa Hermione ehtii vetää pataan aika montaa pahistakin. When I was about ten years old I saw myself clearly in Hermione: a book-loving girl with brown eyes, dark curly hair ja too big front teeth, a nerd who is always the best at everything (except in sports) in her class and who gets to hear about it… Even Hermione’s patronus is an otter which is also my favourite animal! When we were eleven years old we were basically the same person! When not studying, Hermione kicks the butts of quite a many bad guys. If Ichabod Crane faints more often than my other heroes put together, Daniel Jackson DIES more times than all the others (that’s a way to get to my list, too…). But luckily Daniel also does other things than die all the time. For example, he saves the Earth a couple of times, stands up for alien rights and speaks 37 different languages. KIT CARSON (Tex Willer) ”By Josafat’s jazz band!” Kit Carson eli Hopeatukka on Texasin Ranger, jääräpää, pahanilmanlintu ja parhaan kaverinsa Tex Willerin henkilökohtainen suojelusenkeli. Carson vihaa junia ja arvostaa elämän pieniä mukavuuksia, kuten hyvää ruokaa ja lämmintä kylpyä (hattua ei oteta päästä kuin ensin mainitun vuoksia). OBI-WAN KENOBI (Star Wars) ”How did this happen? We’re smarter than this!” Olisiko siistiä olla Jedi? Todellakin. Varsinkin, jos saisi Obi-Wan Kenobin mestarikseen, vaikka sitten joutuisikin sietämään hänen autiomaankuivaa huumorintajuaan. THLAYLI / ISOPÄÄ – THLAYLI / BIGWIG (Ruohometsän kansa – Watership Down ) “I can run and fight and spoil a story telling it.” Isopää (eli kaniinien kielellä Thlayli, “karvapää”) on Watershipin kaniineista kuulusimpia. He’s always doubtful and willing to fight but absolutely faithful to his friends and chief rabbit. As a balance to his fighting nature, Bigwig loves stories, especially the scary ones. Bigwig might be “just” a small rabbit, but he’s also a Hero with a capital H. MIYAMOTO USAGI (Usagi Yojimbo) “I guess I did earn some of that money. I even “dyed” for it.” Miyamoto Usagi haluaisi vain vaeltaa rauhassa pitkin Japanin maaseutua. Sen sijaan hän törmää joka mutkassa vanhoihin ja uusiin ystäviin ja vihollisiin sekä muihin höyrypäihin. Tavallisesti Usagi ei lähtisi mukaan seikkailuihin, ellei joku tarvitsisi hänen apuaan. ZAZU (Leijonakuningas – The Lion King ) "Didn't your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?” Z on aika mahdoton kirjain… Siksi Zazu. Toisaalta pidän kyllä Zazun hahmosta, hänen sarkastisesta asenteestaan, uskollisuudestaan kuninkaalleen sekä brittiläisestä sisustaan. Sitä paitsi Zazu on mielestäni erinomaisesti animoitu hahmo, jolla on tarpeen tullen hampaatkin, vaikka hän onkin lintu… Z is a pretty impossible letter… That’s why Zazu. On the other hand, I do like Zazu – his sarcastic attitude, loyalty to his king and his British sassiness.
